The Japanese Tobacco Research Project team comprises specialists from a range of disciplines and backgrounds, applying a variety of research techniques to uncover some of the fascinating history of tobacco in Japan.
N.R. Jenzen-Jones is the Director of Armament Research Services (ARES), the Editor of Armax: The Journal of Contemporary Arms, and the founder of Helios House Press. Whilst his primary research interests relate to the history of arms, he has authored articles on a wide range of subjects, including several relating to the history of tobacco. He is the editor of Tobacco of the Emperor: A Guide to Imperial Japanese Cigarettes, Pipes, Matches & Accessories (Headstamp Publishing, 2023) and El Habano Moderno: A Collector’s Guide to Cuban Cigars of the Modern Era. Dr Jenzen-Jones is a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and a member of the Académie Internationale de la Pipe.
Patrick Phillips is a historian, researcher, and collector of Second World War Japanese militaria, with a focus on weapons, equipment, and personal items. From 2012 to 2013, Mr. Phillips served in Afghanistan as a combat engineer in the U.S. Army. After leaving the Army, he attended nursing school and currently works as a critical care registered nurse. Mr. Phillips is the author of Tobacco of the Emperor: A Guide to Imperial Japanese Cigarettes, Pipes, Matches & Accessories (Headstamp Publishing, 2023), and his research has been published in Armax: The Journal of Contemporary Arms, SAM Wapenmagazine, and Strzał.pl. He runs Rising Sun History, a website dedicated to the cataloguing of Japanese Second World War military history through the lens of material culture.
Charles Randall is an Associate Researcher with Armament Research Services (ARES) and an Editorial Assistant with Helios House Press. Mr. Randall’s primary research interests relate to arms and munitions, but he has produced work examining a variety of different historical topics. He also has a keen interest in American foreign policy. He continues to produce original research with ARES.
